AAT in Counselling

  • 31 Steps

About

Animal-Assisted Therapy in Counselling presents a competency framework for animal-assisted therapy in counselling (AATC) as a specialised domain of counselling practice. It conceptualises AATC as a goal-directed and ethically grounded intervention that requires more than the presence of an animal within the therapeutic setting. Competent practice is framed as dependent on formal training, knowledge of animal behaviour and welfare, established counselling competence, intentional integration of interventions, and ongoing professional development. Organised across the domains of knowledge, skills, and attitudes, the framework offers structured guidance for counsellors who incorporate their own therapy animals into counselling sessions and clarifies the ethical, relational, and practical responsibilities associated with this area of practice.
